Beyond the Medical Gaze: An Introduction to Disability and Mad Studies

Beyond the Medical Gaze: An Introduction to Disability and Mad Studies Online

In recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, learners will be introduced to the disciplines of Disability Studies and Mad Studies (DS/MS). Both of these areas of study emphasize the experiences, perspectives, and lives of those who receive care from medical professionals. Systemic issues with legislation, policy, built environments and stigma are emphasized; students of these disciplines learn the ways that society excludes, diminishes and “others” people with disabilities and mental health challenges. Using a combination of theory and qualitative research traditions, scholars in Disability Studies and Mad Studies challenge the status quo, and remind us that people are not the problem, rather the way that society is constructed and enacted are.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the origins of Disability and Mad Studies
  2. Identify the research traditions and paradigms used in DS and MS scholarship
  3. Know how to access the major journals and other forms of literature central to DS and MS
  4. Name at least one issue central to this area of research
